Federal Circuit Courts

The federal circuit court system is broken into regions that each Associate Justice is responsible for certain appeals, emergency requests, and other matters. The regions are usually several states near each other, with the main federal court located in one of those states. Each circuit is comprised of several districts that hold court, and different types of law are practiced, for example immigration law, can be practiced at the federal court house. Below is a list of each circuit, what states below to each circuit and what Supreme Court Associate Justice is responsible for that circuit.

First Circuit – the states of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Puerto Rico, and Rhode Island are in this district, with the main court located in Boston, MA. Associate Justice Stephen Breyer is responsible for this district.

Second Circuit – the states of Connecticut, New York, and Vermont are in this district, with the main court located in the Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse in Manhattan. Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor is responsible for this district.

Third Circuit – the states of Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the US Virgin Islands are in this district, with the main court located in Philadelphia, PA. Associate Justice Samuel Alito is responsible for this district.

Fourth Circuit – the states of Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Virginia are in this district, with the main court located in Richmond, Va. Chief Justice John Roberts is responsible for this district.

Fifth Circuit – the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas are in this district, with the main court located in New Orleans, LA. Associate Justice Samuel Alito is responsible for this district.

Sixth Circuit – the states of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee are in this district with the main court located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh is responsible for this district.

Seventh Circuit – the states of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin are in this district with the main court located in Chicago, IL. Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett is responsible for this district.

Eighth Circuit – the states of Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota are in this district, with the main court located in St Louis, MO. Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh is responsible for this district.

Ninth Circuit – the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Nevada, Northern Mariana Islands, and Washington are in this district, with the main courthouse in San Fransisco, CA. Associate Justice Elena Kagan is responsible for this district.

Tenth Circuit – the states of Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming are in this district, with the main court house in Denver, CO. Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch is responsible for this district.

Eleventh Circuit – the States of Alabama, Florida, and Georgia are in this district, with the main court in Atlanta, GA. Associate Justice Clarence Thomas is responsible for this district.

District of Columbia Circuit – the District of Columbia is its own federal district, as it is not a state, and has its own federal circuit for a variety of reasons. Chief Justice John Roberts is responsible for this district.

Federal Circuit – The federal court of appeals has its own district and Chief Justice John Roberts is responsible for this district.
